Principal's Update and the Coleman Connect

Dear Coleman Families,
I hope you're staying cool during these hot days. October is an action-packed month. This week, we will have our Student Council Elections. Please discuss with your students that no matter who wins the different positions, it's important to celebrate all students who participated in the election process. Public speaking requires courage to stand before your peers and deliver a speech.
Teacher-caregiver meetings will take place October 14th-18th. Teachers will hold teacher-caregiver meetings all day on Monday, which means that students do not have school. Tuesday-Friday are minimum days, so school is out at 11:50 am and Tiger Club begins dismissal at 4:30 pm.

Student Council Elections
|
One of Coleman's hallmarks is the Student Council. Our Student Council members lead our Wednesday Morning Messages and help make key decisions. This year, we have 32 students running for office.
Student Council Elections will take place this week. Students who have submitted their permission slips and speeches will give speeches tomorrow, and the elected officials will be announced on Tuesday at the end of the day. If you haven't had a chance, check out the great banners posted in front of the MPR.

Thank you for all the behind-the-scenes work that Ms. Kassy, Ms. Martha, our staff, and families did to ensure that we had a successful two weeks of United Against Hate - Peace Week was a huge success!

United Against Hate Classroom Activities
|
Over the last two weeks, students engaged in many activities in the classroom and during lunch. Seeing students share their experiences to create a peaceful school climate was powerful.

Thank you for driving safely around campus. We have noticed that families have done an excellent job of driving the speed limit on campus - thank you.
Rafael Drive - One Way from 7:30 am - 4:00 pm
Rafael Drive is a narrow road. To reduce the number of accidents on campus, please drive one way on Rafael Drive from Grand Avenue to Belle Avenue.

Independent Study at Coleman
Please plan your family vacations to coincide with school breaks. This will support your child’s learning and commitment to the school. If this is impossible and your child will be absent for 3-14 days, an independent study contract should be requested.
All Independent study inquiries begin with a written request from the family to the front office and the teacher at least 10 days advance notice. Feel free to call the front office or stop in and drop off a written request. “The Superintendent or designee may continue to offer and approve independent study for an individual student upon determining that the student is prepared to meet the district's requirements for independent study and is likely to succeed in independent study as well as or better than the student would in the regular classroom setting.” Students should be on grade level or above in math, reading, and writing and have good attendance. Any requests beyond ten days must be approved by the Assistant Director of Student Services, Susan Akram. Independent study contracts will not be approved if the absence dates are after March 29th.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project consists of the construction of a modular TK Classroom Building with 2 classrooms, a restroom and teacher prep area. A modular ELOC building and a covered walkway are also included. The project consists of construction of a shade canopy, a TK Play Yard and an AC paved area with basketball courts, ball wall and associated striping. Also included are accessibility upgrades and associated path of travel and exterior hardscape and landscaping.
PROJECT UPDATE
The District was able to resolve some previous unforeseen underground conditions and the project is moving forward! This week saw a major milestone with the completion of the drilled piers activity at the building foundations for both the ELOC and TK building. Cages were also set and concrete placed at the piers. Next week the footings will be excavated at both buildings.
