Dear Coleman Families,
I feel incredibly fortunate to be part of such a wonderful community. Every day, I’m reminded of what makes Coleman so special: the richness of our differences, the kindness we share, and the collective belief in our students.
On Wednesday, during our Morning Message, I shared with our students the importance of democracy and the role elections play in our society. We discussed how adult citizens have the right to vote and select leaders and how that process helps ensure a peaceful transition of power. I also pointed to the Student Council election as a great example of this in action. Our 3rd-5th graders voted for their leaders, and throughout the process, our student council candidates modeled respect, kindness, and gratitude toward one another—qualities we hold dear at Coleman.
Additionally, we talked about what it means to be an upstander, someone who stands up for what’s right, even when it’s not easy. Our students have already shown many examples of this in their actions, whether helping a friend or standing up for kindness, and I am confident they will continue to grow in this important way.
Black History Month Planning Committee
All are welcome to join us in the Coleman Library on Wednesday, November 13th, from 4-5 pm, to plan our Black History Month celebrations for February.
Black History Month is a special time when we focus on celebrating and learning about the achievements and contributions of Black people by honoring Black history, Black joy, and Black brilliance. I’m excited to share that we will hold our second annual Black History Month Celebrations through the month of February. We will host special activities to learn about the achievements of Black leaders in various fields like science, arts, sports, and much more.

Book Recommendation - After the Fall, How Humpty Dumpty Got Back up Again
|
We continue to highlight different social-emotional learning methods in classrooms. One area we continue to focus on in school is resilience. The book's message encourages readers to get up again after they fail or get hurt. It's a story about triumph and overcoming fears and can be a metaphor for older kids and adults who may struggle with depression or anxiety.
This is a great book. I recommend you read it to your students so they know that we always bounce back.

Student Attendance Review Board (SARB)
Attendance plays an important role in student success. We want to partner with families to ensure their students attend school. As a school and district, we take a few measures to communicate with families when their students are missing significant amounts of school.
Legally, we are required to inform you if your child is at risk for truancy or may be considered truant. The California Education Code Section 48260 and Board Policy 5113.1.
We will take the following measures to notify families before their students receive their fourth truancy notification:
- As soon as teachers submit their attendance, the office staff contacts families to verify absences.
- Initial truancy: SARB 1 Letter: a letter is mailed home after 3 unexcused absences or three 30-minute periods during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions.
- Second Truancy: SARB 2 Letter: A letter is mailed home after 6 unexcused absences or six 30-minute periods during the school day without a valid excuse on three occasions.
- After a student receives a SARB 2 letter, a Student Attendance Review Team meeting will be scheduled with the family, administrator, teacher, and student.
- Third Truancy (habitual truancy): SARB 3 Letter: A letter is mailed home after 10% of the school year is missed.
- A student who is habitually truant, irregular in school attendance, or habitually insubordinate or disorderly during attendance at school may be referred to, and required to attend, a School Attendance Review Board (SARB) program, a truancy mediation program established by the school district. (Education Code 48263, 48264.5)
