Dear Coleman Families,
Routines and Schedules Over Break
We have one more week of school before Winter Break. The week before break always brings a flood of emotions for students as their routines change. Keeping a routine throughout Winter Break will help students transition into the break and their return to school after break. One way to support your student is by continuing with their school year bedtime routine - check out the Sleep Foundations article Back to School Sleep Tips for bedtime routine tips and tricks.
Additionally, having your kiddos read 20-30 minutes daily is vital to their continued growth. We recommend that your students practice counting or math facts daily over break.
Art & Dance Showcase
We’re thrilled to invite you to our Art and Dance Showcase on Wednesday, December 18, from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. Each class will perform a dance led by their dance teacher from Youth in Arts, and Ms. Tracy Nick, our incredible art teacher, will display stunning artwork from our TK-1st grade students.
This festive event is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the creativity of our students and come together as a community. We hope to see you there!
The Grass Field and Reseeding
The Maintenance and Operations team has shut down the grass field to reseed and aerate. We look forward to fresh grass - thanks, M and O! Further exciting news is that we are working on an MOU with Dominican University to access one of their parking lots, which will be shut down to all vehicles so that students can access extra play space in a safe area.
To provide access, the business office has permitted the construction team to create a path from room 16 through the back garden to Watt Avenue. I'm grateful for all the district office's support in making this happen!

Curious what the principal is reading for fun?
|
Don't Hug the Quokka! by Daniel Errico is an engaging picture book that helps young readers understand the importance of respecting personal boundaries in a fun and approachable way. Recommended by the American Psychological Association, this story uses humor and charming illustrations to teach children valuable lessons about consent and empathy. It's a must-read for fostering emotional intelligence and healthy relationships as you prepare for the holidays.

Sleep
Children (all people) need to sleep a lot in order to reach their maximum potential. Below is information on sleep from the American Academy of Pediatrics:
- Children 3 to 5 years of age should sleep 10 to 13 hours per 24 hours (including naps) on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
- Children 6 to 12 years of age should sleep 9 to 12 hours per 24 hours on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
“...adequate sleep duration for age on a regular basis leads to improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, and mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep each night is associated with an increase in injuries, hypertension, obesity and depression, especially for teens who may experience increased risk of self-harm or suicidal thoughts.
In addition to these recommendations, the AAP suggests that all screens be turned off 30 minutes before bedtime and that TV, computers and other screens not be allowed in children's bedrooms. For infants and young children, establishing a bedtime routine is important to ensuring children get adequate sleep each night. The AAP program, "Brush, Book, Bed," is available here: http://bit.ly/bedroutine.”
