Dear Coleman Families,
Happy 2025! We hope you had a wonderful Winter Break and a Happy New Year. We look forward to welcoming students back on campus on Tuesday, January 7th. Please note that Monday, January 6th is a non-student teacher work day (no school for students).
We concluded 2024 with our Winter Sharecase, dancing our way into the New Year! This joyful event brought our community together in celebration. Special thanks to our TK-1st grade arts prep teacher, Ms. Tracy Nick, for displaying the outstanding student work; our family volunteers; Mr. Ben and Mr. Diego for leading our students and families in community dances; and Barbara Yupit Gomez, David Peterson, and Morgan Schauffler from Youth in Arts for hosting such a memorable event.
Community Network
Our Community Network gift giveaway was a tremendous success thanks to your generous support. Through this initiative, we witnessed how gift-giving strengthens our school community by creating meaningful connections and teaching our students that everyone deserves care and support. Your contributions helped our students experience firsthand how their actions can make a positive difference in others' lives. The Community Network truly exemplifies what makes Coleman special.
Attendance Success
We're thrilled to report that our school attendance continues to improve! Our students have maintained a 95.9% attendance rate since the start of the school year, up from 94.25% at this time last year. This upward trend directly supports our students' academic and social growth, as evidenced by their improved performance on the i-Ready ELA and Mathematics diagnostic exams..

Book Recommendation - Two New Years
|
Over Winter Break, we read Two New Years by Richard Ho to our kids. In it, Mr. Ho reflects on his experiences in a blended family and compares and contrasts two New Years: Rosh Hashanah and the Lunar New Year. In the Jewish New Year, people can bake challah, dip apples in honey, and lift voices in song. In the spring, the Lunar New Year brings a chance to eat dumplings, watch dragon dances, and release glowing lanterns that light up the sky.

Sleep
Children (all people) need to sleep a lot in order to reach their maximum potential. Below is information on sleep from the American Academy of Pediatrics:
- Children 3 to 5 years of age should sleep 10 to 13 hours per 24 hours (including naps) on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
- Children 6 to 12 years of age should sleep 9 to 12 hours per 24 hours on a regular basis to promote optimal health.
“...adequate sleep duration for age on a regular basis leads to improved attention, behavior, learning, memory, emotional regulation, quality of life, and mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep each night is associated with an increase in injuries, hypertension, obesity and depression, especially for teens who may experience increased risk of self-harm or suicidal thoughts.
In addition to these recommendations, the AAP suggests that all screens be turned off 30 minutes before bedtime and that TV, computers and other screens not be allowed in children's bedrooms. For infants and young children, establishing a bedtime routine is important to ensuring children get adequate sleep each night. The AAP program, "Brush, Book, Bed," is available here: http://bit.ly/bedroutine.”
