Principal's Update

May 4, 2025
Dear Coleman Families,

What a vibrant week! We celebrated the start of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month with Bollywood and K-Pop music and dancing in the MP room. Our Open House on Wednesday was a great success, and it was wonderful to see so many families and witness the impressive growth of our students. We also enjoyed a fun Twin Day to wrap up the week. Thank you to all the families who attended Open House, and a special thank you to our dedicated teachers, staff, and Maintenance and Operations team for making it such a fantastic event.

State Testing for 3rd-5th

The California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) in English Language Arts and Math for all third through fifth-grade students will be administered from May 5th to May 13th. This assessment provides a snapshot of student mastery of grade-level state standards and allows them to showcase their learning. We encourage all students to try their best while maintaining a healthy approach to testing by pacing themselves and taking breaks.
We are coordinating with our TK-2nd grade classrooms to support a quiet testing environment. If your child is in third through fifth grade, please ensure they get sufficient sleep and a nutritious breakfast each day before testing.

Book Recommendation: Fred Korematsu Speaks Up By Laura Atkins , Stan Yogi , Yutaka Houlette

Discover the inspiring story of Fred Korematsu, a young American who loved music and tennis but bravely stood up against the unjust forced removal of Japanese Americans during World War II. Facing imprisonment for his defiance, Fred's courageous fight for his rights, beautifully told in the Fighting for Justice series, shows how one person can challenge discrimination and make a difference. This powerful book encourages young readers to recognize injustice and speak up for what is right.

Coleman Student, Family, and Staff Handbook Highlight

Bikes, Scooters, and Things with Wheels

Helmets are required for every bicycle, skateboard, roller blader/skater and scooter rider.  Bike racks are located at the front and rear of the campus. Students who do not wear helmets will lose their privilege to ride to school until they get a helmet. If you need help getting a helmet, please contact the front office. Bikes, scooters, and skateboards may not be ridden on the school grounds between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

When school is out, riders should go directly home.

These rules also apply to roller shoes, rollerblades, skateboards, and scooters (which should be carried while on campus and taken to the racks as soon as possible). Allowing a child to ride a bike or walk to school unaccompanied by an adult is a parental decision.  Only parents can judge if their child is mature enough to handle this responsibility.
