Principal's Update

September 21, 2025
Dear Coleman Families,

Happy Sunday! Last week was a busy one at Coleman. From picture day to our first Hispanic Heritage celebration, flag making at lunch with students from San Rafael High Schools, Educator Pathway helping out.

During this time of year, students are often pretty tired from the amount of events that we try to fit in as parents. It's a good time to schedule fun outings with your kids while also pausing and having students get ample rest. We suggest sitting down and readng a good book with your kiddo over the weekend.

Shelter-in-Place Drill

The Shelter-in-Place drill was a success. We went over the intercom and announced that this is a Shelter-in-Place. Students who were at PE went inside to the MPR and continued with the doors locked. The remainder of classrooms locked the doors, kept their lights on, and continued learning.

A shelter-in-place is a precautionary measure used to keep students and staff safe indoors while continuing with everyday activities.

Lifetouch Picture Retakes

Lifetouch pictures were in and out on Monday, ensuring that students didn't wait around for an extended period of time and miss important instruction. A few people reached out with questions about makeup and refunds.

Do you offer refunds?
Yes, they offer a refund if you are not satisfied with your picture package.

Why do we only get one image to choose from?
They take one image per child, though they can retake it on the spot if needed. When you order online, you can choose from various backgrounds, which will crop the image differently, giving you a unique look.

Is there a fee for make-up photos? Photo Make-up Day is October 28th.

No, there is no fee for make-up photos. If you're not satisfied with the original image, simply return the entire package to the photographer on make-up day, and we'll retake the photo and produce a new package for you.

Hispanic Heritage Celebrations and Potluck
Please join us on Friday, September 26, from 5-7 for an evening of celebrating and honoring Hispanic Heritage. Families are encouraged to bring whatever they can, don't feel shy.
Whether it's a home-cooked dish or something store-bought, it all helps us connect and celebrate together. We are excited to have traditional dancing from Guatemala and Mexico. A huge thank you to the PTO for sponsoring the event.

Soccer Goals

I'm grateful for Anthony Byrne and Andrea Ramirez for donating two sets of goals for our kiddos to play. Our students were thrilled to have kid-sized goals set up for them. Thank you, Aaron Anspach, Jim Houk, Todd MacKaben, and Keith and Amber Camberon for setting up the goals!

My Two Border Towns

Book Recommendation: My Two Border Towns by David Bowles

Inspired by his life on the U.S.-Mexico border, award-winning author David Bowles crafts a moving debut picture book. It follows a boy and his father on their Saturday trip to "The Other Side," visiting favorite places and family friends. Their journey is a vibrant depiction of community, including a pivotal stop where they deliver supplies to friends seeking asylum. Beautifully illustrated by Erika Meza, My Two Border Towns is a heartfelt tribute to the complexity and humanity of border life.

Coleman Handbook Highlight

Bikes, Scooters, and Things with Wheels
Helmets are required for every bicycle, skateboard, roller blader/skater and scooter rider. Bike racks are located at the front and rear of the campus. Students who do not wear helmets will lose their privilege to ride to school until they get a helmet. If you need help getting a helmet, please contact the front office. Bikes, scooters, and skateboards may not be ridden on the school grounds between 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

When school is out, riders should go directly home.

These rules also apply to roller shoes, rollerblades, skateboards, and scooters (which should be carried while on campus and taken to the racks as soon as possible). Allowing a child to ride a bike or walk to school unaccompanied by an adult is a parental decision. Only parents can judge if their child is mature enough to handle this responsibility.

SRCS Bond Project Updates

update
SRCS Bond Project - Coleman Elementary

 PROJECTED SCHEDULE
Construction Start: 6/16/25
Completion: 9/19/25

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project will modernize the kindergarten and upper-grade play areas, improving overall campus functionality. The New Kindergarten play yard will feature a brand-new play structure designed to stimulate young children, surrounded by protective surfacing. A designated shade structure will also be built for the kindergarten lunch area. The upper-grade playground will receive new play equipment. Both playgrounds will include new AC paving and playground striping. Campus-wide enhancements will include a large shade structure with picnic tables in the main lunch area, the
addition of bio-retention areas and associated landscaping, and a new marquee at the front of the campus to improve visibility and communication.

PROJECT UPDATE
This week, the kindergarten area came alive with the installation of a new sandbox. We also made significant progress on the bioretention systems. For Bioretention A, we poured concrete and removed the forms, and placed a new tree right beside it. At Bioretention B, we finished installing the splash blocks and continued planting additional vegetation.
