Dear Coleman Families,
We've had a wonderful start to October! While observing and helping out in classrooms, I've seen so many engaging lessons.
Ms. Kassy and Ms. Martha have kicked off their Safe Touch Lessons in first grade. They typically present these lessons to our TK–1st graders, tailoring the discussion to each class's needs and grade level. This instruction is essential during this age range (typically 4–7), as students begin to realize their physical strength while also learning how to communicate their feelings effectively. Coaching them on safe play is a critical focus.
A few of the topics they discuss are:
- What does it mean for a touch to be a 'safe touch' or an 'unsafe touch,' and can you give me an example of each?"
- If someone is getting too close and you don't like it, or they touch you in a way you don't want, what are the words you can use to ask them to stop?
- Can you tell me which parts of your body are private (covered by a bathing suit) and should not be touched by anyone, unless a grown-up (like a doctor or a parent) is helping you stay healthy?
One of my favorite parts of my role is spending time in our TK classrooms. If you observe our youngest learners, you'll see they are deeply engaged in intentional play, imaginative scenarios, and academic discourse. Through play, students learn to work collaboratively and are prompted by staff to develop their oral and academic language. It's a ton of fun to see them working so hard while having a blast!
Engaging in oral language is vital to your child's development. You can support this at home by prompting questions while they are involved in building or play activities. Try asking things like:
- how tall do you plan on making your bridge? How long?
- What do you need to change to make the ball roll across the bridge?
Be warned: if you're like me and ask too many questions, your five-year-old may politely ask you to stop interrupting their imaginative play!
Caretaker Conferences are scheduled for Monday, October 13, through Friday, October 17. Please note that Monday, October 13, is a non-student day for conferences. To accommodate these meetings, school will dismiss early at 11:50 a.m. (minimum day release) from Tuesday, October 14, through Friday, October 17.

Pedro Martín has grown up hearing stories about his abuelito—his legendary crime-fighting, grandfather who was once a part of the Mexican Revolution! But that doesn’t mean Pedro is excited at the news that Abuelito is coming to live with their family. After all, Pedro has 8 brothers and sisters and the house is crowded enough! Still, Pedro piles into the Winnebago with his family for a road trip to Mexico to bring Abuelito home, and what follows is the trip of a lifetime, one filled with laughs and heartache. Along the way, Pedro finally connects with his abuelito and learns what it means to grow up and find his grito.

Student Leadership Opportunities
Student Council
The Student Council program involves children in student government, teaches responsibility and decision-making, and promotes school spirit. Council members participate in activities to improve the school environment and contribute to special programs. Activities have included a holiday food and toy drive, recycling projects, a talent show, and special spirit days. Students in grades three through five are eligible to participate as school representatives.
Green Team
A student-led program designed to promote conservation, develop an understanding of resource use, and help drive decision-making in a more eco-friendly manner. The Green Team has spearheaded our Zero-Waste partnership, schoolwide recycling, and compost program.
Tiger Team
A 3rd-5th student-led program designed to promote leadership, problem-solving, positive behavior, inclusivity, and belonging. Our Tiger Team members sign up quarterly and are trained by staff members to help resolve conflicts on the playground. Students meet weekly to discuss different issues arising during recess and the best way to resolve conflicts. It’s a great way for students to learn conflict-resolution skills.

Construction Start: 6/16/25
Completion: 9/19/25
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project will modernize the kindergarten and upper-grade play areas, improving overall campus functionality. The New Kindergarten play yard will feature a brand-new play structure designed to stimulate young children, surrounded by protective surfacing. A designated shade structure will also be built for the kindergarten lunch area. The upper-grade playground will receive new play equipment. Both playgrounds will include new AC paving and playground striping. Campus-wide enhancements will include a large shade structure with picnic tables in the main lunch area, the
addition of bio-retention areas and associated landscaping, and a new marquee at the front of the campus to improve visibility and communication.
