Principal's Update

October 12, 2025
Dear Coleman Families,

Coleman had an exciting, eventful week!
Our campus hosted several wonderful activities: special guests led classroom read-alouds, our 4th and 5thGraders went on a field trip, and we celebrated the opening of the new blacktop, playground, and parcourse for students in grades 1-5. The week culminated with a high-energy performance by the San Rafael High School Band on Friday.

We also had one particularly memorable—and smelly—surprise! A skunk decided to visit the bioretention swale near the blacktop, requiring us to initiate an official Shelter-in-Place drill. All teachers and students quickly and effectively closed their doors and continued with instruction while the construction crew safely managed the unexpected guest. A big thank you to our staff and students for handling the situation so smoothly!

Hispanic Heritage at Coleman

Coleman celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month by fully embracing our district values of Equity, Community, and Joy!

The month was packed with meaningful activities:
They learned about the contributions of prominent Latine leaders, explored the significance of the various Latin American flags—including the meaning behind their colors and emblems—and we celebrated as a community with a joyful potluck filled with beautiful music and dancing.

To cap off the festivities, students from the San Rafael High School Educator Pathway course led inspiring read-alouds in our classrooms. These high schoolers were powerful role models and future leaders for our younger students. As a special highlight, Superintendent Diaz Ghysels visited Room 10 to share a story, making it a particularly memorable day for those students!

Questions to Ask Your Student's Teacher
Parent-teacher conferences are being held this week, Monday through Friday. Monday is a non-student day dedicated to conferences. Tuesday through Friday are minimum day release days, with dismissal at 11:50 a.m. To help guide your conference discussions, we have prepared the following questions:

Suggested Conference Discussion Points:
  • Class Participation: How does my child participate in class? Are they actively engaged, hesitant, or disengaged?
  • Academic Standards: What are the key grade-level math and reading skills/standards my child is expected to master this year?
  • Home-School Connection: What activities can we do at home to support and reinforce classroom learning?
  • Assessment Results: Can you explain my child's scores on the i-Ready and/or Foundational Literacy Assessment (FLA)?
  • Social Interaction: How is my child's social interaction with peers? Are they making friends, and do they need support in social situations?
  • Independence and Self-Advocacy: How can we support my child's independence and encourage them to advocate for their needs?
  • Response to Feedback: How does my child respond to feedback or corrections?

Book Recommendation: Archie Celebrates DiwaliMitali Banerjee Ruths, illustrated by Parwinder Singh by Pedro Martin

It's Archie's favorite holiday—Diwali. And this year she gets to share it with her friends and introduce them to the festival of lights! Archana loves her family's annual Diwali party, and this year she gets to share it with all her friends from school. She helps with the decorations and the food, and is eager for everyone to arrive. But once the party starts a thunderstorm kicks up and drenches the outside decorations and knocks out the power. Archie worries that everything will be ruined. How can there be a festival of lights without any electricity?

SRCS Bond Project Updates

SRCS Bond Project - Coleman Elementary

 PROJECTED SCHEDULE
Construction Start: 6/16/25
Completion: 9/19/25

PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The project will modernize the kindergarten and upper-grade play areas, improving overall campus functionality. The New Kindergarten play yard will feature a brand-new play structure designed to stimulate young children, surrounded by protective surfacing. A designated shade structure will also be built for the kindergarten lunch area. The upper-grade playground will receive new play equipment. Both playgrounds will include new AC paving and playground striping. Campus-wide enhancements will include a large shade structure with picnic tables in the main lunch area, the
addition of bio-retention areas and associated landscaping, and a new marquee at the front of the campus to improve visibility and communication.

PROJECT UPDATE
The project reached substantial completion this week, thanks to the closeout of several significant areas of work. Specifically, the main shade structure and the playground painting were finished and handed back to the school for immediate use. Additionally, the kindergarten area fence was raised, and the new fence around one of the bioretention areas was completed. The only remaining items are minimal punch list tasks and some added scope that is scheduled to begin next week.
