The Principal's Post
Dear Coleman Families,

I hope you all had a chance to soak up the beautiful weather this weekend! It was a breath of fresh air to finally trade the jackets for short sleeves and get outside.

Tiger Trails Success

Tiger Trails was a success! This past Thursday, fifteen of our 4th and 5th-grade student leaders took charge, presenting our school’s positive behavior expectations in both English and Spanish to their 1st-5th grade peers.

Stationed at six key locations - from the rainbow restrooms to the grass field - these leaders reviewed rules and modeled "The Tiger Way," through clear examples. We truly believe students learn best when their peers set the tone.

A huge shout-out to our school counselor, Ms. Kassy, for her incredible work organizing and empowering our student leaders!

Crab Feed – One Week to Go!

The "Grease Lightning" Crab Feed is one week away! This fundraiser supports a ton of things on campus, from dance and music to field trips.

An event this big takes a village. We are still looking for hands to help with setup and breakdown - it’s a fantastic way to get involved and meet other families. Thank you for helping us make our school community such a special place!

Book Recommendation: How Do You Spell Unfair?: Macnolia Cox and the National Spelling Bee Carole by Boston Weatherford

In 1936, eighth grader MacNolia Cox became the first African American to win the Akron, Ohio, spelling bee. And with that win, she was asked to compete at the prestigious National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC, where she and a girl from New Jersey were the first African Americans invited since its founding. She left her home state a celebrity—right up there with Ohio’s own Joe Louis and Jesse Owens—with a military band and a crowd of thousands to see her off at the station. But celebration turned to chill when the train crossed the state line into Maryland, where segregation was the law of the land. Prejudice and discrimination ruled—on the train, in the hotel, and, sadly, at the spelling bee itself. With a brief epilogue recounting MacNolia’s further history, How Do You Spell Unfair? is the story of her groundbreaking achievement magnificently told by award-winning creators and frequent picture-book collaborators Carole Boston Weatherford and Frank Morrison.

Coleman Handbook Highlight

Bikes, Scooters, and Things with Wheels
Helmets are required for every bicycle, skateboard, roller blader/skater and scooter rider.  Bike racks are located at the front and rear of the campus. Students who do not wear helmets will lose their privilege to ride to school until they get a helmet. If you need help getting a helmet, please contact the front office. Bikes, scooters, and skateboards may not be ridden on the school grounds.

When school is out, riders should go directly home.

These rules also apply to roller shoes, rollerblades, skateboards, and scooters (which should be carried while on campus and taken to the racks as soon as possible). Allowing a child to ride a bike or walk to school unaccompanied by an adult is a parental decision.  Only parents can judge if their child is mature enough to handle this responsibility.
