The Principal's Post
Dear Coleman Families,

It has been a wonderful week at our school, filled with community spirit and important lessons both inside and outside the classroom. Here are a few highlights and reminders as we head into the new week.

Celebrating Our Community

Our Black History Month Movie Night was a huge success! It was truly a lovely evening, and seeing our families, students, and staff come together to celebrate was the highlight of my week.
I want to give a huge shout-out to our school counselor, Ms. Kassy, for organizing this event. Ms. Kassy does a fabulous job of finding ways to bring our community together, and we are so grateful for her dedication to our students’ sense of belonging.

Before the movie Soul began, we were treated to a special presentation by Ms. Laura and our student Green Team. They shared insightful ways we can all reduce waste through better sorting and recycling. It’s inspiring to see our students taking such an active role in caring for our environment!

Morning Drop Off in the Roundabout

Based on recent feedback regarding traffic flow and some "erratic" driving maneuvers, we have dedicated staff members to support traffic control in the roundabout each morning. Our goal is simple: keep our students safe and keep the line moving efficiently.

The "Fast & Friendly" Drop-Off Guide

1. Before You Leave the House
  • The "Hug & Kiss" Rule: Give your hugs and well-wishes before you get in the car. This saves precious seconds at the curb!
  • Ready to Launch: Pack backpacks and lunchboxes right next to your student so they can grab them and exit immediately.

2. Entering the Roundabout
  • Take Turns: Southbound and northbound traffic should use a "zipper merge" style, taking turns turning right and left into the circle.
  • Respect the Crosswalk: Please do not block the crosswalk. Our pedestrians need a clear, safe path to reach the front doors.

3. Filling the Circle
  • Pull Forward: The first car in line should pull all the way up to the stop sign.
  • The "First Six" Rule: To keep things orderly, students should wait to exit the vehicle until they are one of the first six cars in the line.

4. The Exit
  • Independence is Key: Students should be able to open and close their car doors independently.
  • Sidewalk Bound: Once out, students should head straight to the sidewalk and toward the entrance.

Enrollment

It is already time to look toward the next school year! Please complete the enrollment form for each child as soon as possible, preferably by Friday, March 6, 2026.
Why this matters: Your response is critical. This information helps us accurately project our student population and determine the number of classes and teachers we will need for the 2026-2027 school year. Coleman 26-27 Enrollment form HERE.

Book Recommendation: Main Street: A Community Story About Redlining by Britt Hawthorne (Author), Tiffany Jewell (Author)

In this intergenerational picture book, young Olivia deals with the sting of neighborhood prejudice after a friend claims her street isn't safe. Through her neighbor Ms. Effie, Olivia learns the history of redlining and how her community used organization and resilience to fight back against discriminatory banking practices. Written by New York Times bestselling authors, the story celebrates the power of collective action and includes educational backmatter to help readers engage with their own communities.

Coleman Handbook Highlight

Personal Items and Toys at School
To ensure a focused, safe, and productive learning environment, Coleman maintains a policy regarding personal items brought from home. While we understand that children often want to share their favorite things with friends, these items frequently cause distractions, conflicts, or accidental loss.
Students are asked to leave all personal toys and non-essential items at home. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Action figures, dolls, and plushies.
  • Trading cards (e.g., Pokémon, sports cards, Magic: The Gathering).
  • Handheld gaming devices, electronic devices and toys.
  • Sports equipment from home (unless specifically requested by a teacher).
  • Fidget tools (unless documented in a student's IEP or 504 plan).
Items that are not strictly toys but are being used as such - for example, decorative keychains, laser pointers, or elaborate stationery - are also subject to this policy. If an item becomes a distraction to the student or their peers, it will be treated as a toy and collected by the teacher.
Responsibility for Lost or Stolen Items
Coleman is not responsible for the loss, theft, or damage of any personal items brought to school. School staff cannot dedicate instructional time to investigating "trades" gone wrong or searching for missing cards. By keeping these valuables at home, families can ensure they remain safe and intact.
If a student brings a prohibited item to school:
  1. First Instance: The item will be kept in the student's backpack or the teacher’s desk until the end of the day.
  2. Repeated Instances: The item will be held in the front office, and a parent or guardian will be required to come and pick it up.
Special Exceptions
Occasionally, teachers may designate "Show and Tell" days or "Reward Days" where specific items are allowed. In these cases, parents will receive a written notice. Even during these special events, the school remains not liable for the safety of the items.
