The Principal's Post
Families:
I hope you enjoyed the beautiful weather over the weekend. Please remember that next week that school is not in session on Monday, March 16 because teachers will hold Caretaker Conferences. Tuesday, March 17 - Friday, March 20 are minimum day release with school ending at 11:50 am. We look forward to seeing you there.

Helping our morning drop-off run like clockwork!
We’re working hard to make morning drop-off safer and smoother for everyone. To keep the line moving and our students safe, please keep these "Pro-Tips" in mind:
  • Be "Ready to Roll": Please have backpacks on laps and save the big hugs for the driveway! The goal is to be ready as soon as you hit the circle.
  • Fill the Gap: If you’re the lead car, please pull all the way up to the stop sign. We aim to fill the circle with six cars at a time.
  • The "Six-Car" Flow: We unload in batches. Once all six cars unload and pedestrians clear the crosswalk, that group moves out so the next six can move in.
  • Watch the Vest: Please wait for the staff member in the safety vest to signal before letting your student out. If no one is present, please follow the "batch" flow mentioned above.
Thanks for staying alert and helping us start the school day on a high note!

Questions to Ask During Conferences
  • Class Participation: How does my child participate in class? Are they actively engaged, hesitant, or disengaged?
  • Academic Standards: What are the key grade-level math and reading skills/standards my child is expected to master this year? How is my child progressing towards mastery of those standards?
  • Home-School Connection: What activities can we do at home to support and reinforce classroom learning?
  • Assessment Results: Can you explain my child's scores on the i-Ready and/or Foundational Literacy Assessment (FLA)?
  • Social Interaction: How is my child's social interaction with peers? Are they making friends, and do they need support in social situations?
  • Independence and Self-Advocacy: How can we support my child's independence and encourage them to advocate for their needs?
  • Response to Feedback: How does my child respond to feedback or corrections?

Tiger Art on Public Display
We are proud to share that every student at Coleman contributed to a collaborative mural inspired by Faith Ringgold’s celebrated quilt, Tar Beach. As part of this project, students studied the artwork, learned about the concept of a “tar beach,” and discussed the powerful story behind the iconic image.

Inspired by Ringgold’s unique perspective and floral border, Coleman students created their own rooftop view of San Rafael, surrounding it with a vibrant flower border that pays tribute to her original design.

Faith Ringgold (1930–2024) was an influential American artist best known for her intricately crafted story quilts that explore African American history and culture.

The completed mural will be on public display at the San Rafael Public Library (100 E St, San Rafael) throughout the month of March.

Book Recommendation: Choosing Brave How Mamie Till-Mobley and Emmett Till Sparked the Civil Rights Movement by Angela J

Mamie Till-Mobley is the mother of Emmett Till, the 14-year-old boy who was brutally murdered while visiting the South in 1955. His death became a rallying point for the civil rights movement, but few know that it was his mother who was the catalyst for bringing his name to the forefront of history.

In Choosing Brave, Angela Joy and Janelle Washington offer a testament to the power of love, the bond of motherhood, and one woman's unwavering advocacy for justice. It is a poised, moving work about a woman who refocused her unimaginable grief into action for the greater good. Mamie fearlessly refused to allow America to turn away from what happened to her only child. She turned pain into change that ensured her son's life mattered.
