Book Recommendation: Meg and Greg Book Series by Elspeth and Rowena Rae

The Meg and Greg book series, authored by Elspeth and Rowena Rae, is a highly acclaimed, research-based collection of decodable chapter books specifically crafted for children aged 5–10. Designed with a focus on striving readers and those with dyslexia, the series employs a unique two-reader shared format. This layout allows a beginner to tackle decodable text while a more confident reader handles more complex narrative sections, fostering collaborative success without the frustration often found in traditional early readers.

Beyond its social reading structure, the series is praised for its dyslexia-friendly design, featuring specialized fonts, generous spacing, and bolded phonetic patterns to help children decode with ease. Unlike many phonics-heavy books that can feel overly simplistic, Meg and Greg delivers lighthearted, humorous, and age-appropriate animal adventures that keep kids engaged. Each story strategically targets specific phonics skills - such as r-controlled vowels or suffixes - making it an essential resource for building confidence and a genuine love for reading.

Coleman Handbook Highlight

Library

The Coleman library plays a vital role in the total educational program of our school.  From the beginning of Transitional kindergarten to the end of fifth grade, students have access to the library through scheduled class visits and small group research time.  The class visits include time to browse and check out books and to do research.

As parents, you can help ensure your child’s academic success by taking an interest in the books your child brings home, and by structuring time for you and your child to read.  Also, parents can help out Coleman’s librarian by making sure books are returned by their due dates. Email notices are sent home every week with your child’s book checkouts.  It is very important that books are returned so that other students can enjoy them too! In addition, parents and caregivers can also check out books to read with their child.

Though we do not charge late or lost damage fees, we do request donations for lost or damaged books.
