The Principal's Post
Families:

What an amazing week it has been! We had a jam-packed schedule full of community-building, school pride, testing, and wonderful celebrations. I want to extend a huge thank you to everyone who participated and helped make the past few days so memorable for our students.

I want to give a special shout-out to our amazing teachers and staff. Thank you for pouring your hearts and your time into creating a spectacular Open House. You work incredibly hard to bring magic to Coleman, and we are grateful for the energy and dedication you pour into our kiddos.

Open House & Superintendent Visit

Anticipation was high this week as Superintendent Diaz Ghysels joined me on Wednesday to visit our classrooms. Our students were overjoyed to practice their Open House presentations for "the principal of all the principals," and the Superintendent left thoroughly impressed by our dedicated staff and vibrant student learning.

That amazing energy carried right into our Open House! It was wonderful to see so many families filling the halls. The enthusiasm was palpable as our kiddos walked around with their clipboards, proudly presenting their hard work, favorite projects, and the immense progress they’ve made this year.

The Inclusion Project Launch & Special Guest

This week, our third graders welcomed a special guest speaker from Marin Ventures, a wonderful community day program for adults with developmental disabilities. The speaker connected directly with our students, sharing powerful personal stories about how kindness, inclusion, empathy, and connection make our community a better place. Our third graders were highly engaged in the conversation, asking thoughtful questions and truly taking the message of belonging to heart.

Spirit Day

Class Colors & Lunchtime Fun School spirit was at an all-time high during our Spirit Day! Students arrived dressed in their designated grade-level colors, creating the 25-26 Coleman Rainbow picture. Ms. Gomez's room 3 students took home the "Golden Boot" the Coleman spirit day trophy, having the highest number of students in their grade level colors. A big shout out to Mike Taylor for taking our Rainbow Picture.

PRIDE at Coleman

At Coleman Elementary, we prioritize creating a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community for every student. We firmly believe that everyone has the right to feel safe being exactly who they are, regardless of race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, gender identity, or sexual orientation. To uplift and amplify the voices within our diverse community, we are delighted to celebrate the contributions of our Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and plus (LGBTQ+) community through our annual PRIDE Celebration from June 1st to 5th. We welcome all students to honor who they are during this fun week of lunchtime activities. You can find the full schedule of events in the flyer below!

Book Recommendation: Ritu in the Sun By Moniza Hossain Illustrated by Mercè López

A lyrical picture book about one little girl’s experience with colorism—and a celebration of that which can make us see things anew: light and love.

Ritu loves the sun. She loves it in the morning when it slants in through the kitchen window; in the afternoon when it makes the pool sparkle; and in the evening when it lights up the sky with splashes of orange and pink. But her Nani is worried the sun will give Ritu a tan.

Can Ritu convince her that all skin colors are beautiful—including Nani’s own?

Coleman Handbook Highlight

Personal Items and Toys at School
To ensure a focused, safe, and productive learning environment, Coleman maintains a policy regarding personal items brought from home. While we understand that children often want to share their favorite things with friends, these items frequently cause distractions, conflicts, or accidental loss.
Students are asked to leave all personal toys and non-essential items at home. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Action figures, dolls, and plushies.
  • Trading cards (e.g., Pokémon, sports cards, Magic: The Gathering).
  • Handheld gaming devices, electronic devices and toys.
  • Sports equipment from home (unless specifically requested by a teacher).
  • Fidget tools (unless documented in a student's IEP or 504 plan).
Items that are not strictly toys but are being used as such - for example, decorative keychains, laser pointers, or elaborate stationery - are also subject to this policy. If an item becomes a distraction to the student or their peers, it will be treated as a toy and collected by the teacher.

Responsibility for Lost or Stolen Items
Coleman is not responsible for the loss, theft, or damage of any personal items brought to school. School staff cannot dedicate instructional time to investigating "trades" gone wrong or searching for missing cards. By keeping these valuables at home, families can ensure they remain safe and intact.
If a student brings a prohibited item to school:
  1. First Instance: The item will be kept in the student's backpack or the teacher’s desk until the end of the day.
  2. Repeated Instances: The item will be held in the front office, and a parent or guardian will be required to come and pick it up.
