Coleman’s Commitment to Sustainability Earns Top Honors

Congratulations to Coleman Elementary for earning Platinum Level Zero Waste Certification by the Zero Waste Schools Program this school year, recognizing exceptional achievement in campus sustainability and waste reduction. The platinum designation is the highest-level awarded by Zero Waste Marin and reflects outstanding progress in student leadership, school-wide systems and environmental education.

Through the work of the student-led Green Team and school-wide environmental education efforts, Coleman made significant progress in building a strong culture of sustainability; reducing waste; and improving proper recycling and composting practices. Over the past two years, the school has reduced weekly landfill waste collection from 15 cubic yards to just six cubic yards. Coleman’s work reflects the power of student leadership and demonstrates how small, consistent actions can create meaningful change for both the school community and the environment.

They're also producing videos to support Zero Waste efforts at home. Check out the latest: EnglishSpanish

Special thanks to Laura McGivern, a Coleman IA and Sustainability Lead, and school custodians Estuardo Cordon and Sheilacy Owen, as well as many parent volunteers and school staff for their outstanding efforts.

Educators Honored at State of the City

At the 2026 State of the City event hosted by the San Rafael Chamber in May, two SRCS educators were honored through the “Dedication to Excellence in Education” program. Congratulations to San Rafael High School teacher Alexandra (Alex) Verheecke and Davidson Middle School Dean Tom Kordick on this well-deserved recognition (pictured below with Chamber President & CEO Karen Strolia).

This honor reflects their dedication, passion, and the lasting impact they have on students and our community. We are grateful for their commitment to education and proud to celebrate their achievements!

Mental Health Billing Consent to be Part of 2026 Back-to-School Forms

Looking ahead to the 2026 Back-to-School Forms in the Aeries Parent Portal (also known as "data confirmation") that will launch in August, there will be additional information and steps for parents to complete regarding the CYBHI mental health support for our schools. Stay tuned for more details about this important undertaking.

Background: Mental health is a priority, and we're taking an important step forward! SRCS is rolling out the state-wide Children and Youth Behavioral Health Initiative (CYBHI). CYBHI is a first-of-its-kind effort to ensure all students can access mental health support in schools. The new CYBHI fee schedule program makes it easier for students to get critical services at school at no cost, while also helping to sustain existing student wellness programs.

Parents’ partnership is essential to access these additional resources. California’s health plans and insurers are now required to reimburse public schools for covered mental health services provided to students at school. This will bring additional funding directly back to our schools and students! Most importantly, state law protects families, guaranteeing zero impact to your insurance coverage.

We are proud to partner with the Marin County Office of Education to bring this essential work to our District. Learn more

Navigating Mental Health and Substance Use

The recording from the May Let's Talk session is now available. This community discussion explored Mental Health and Underage Substance Use with guest speaker Dr. Madison Buchanan, a double board-certified psychiatrist in adult and addiction psychiatry trained at Vanderbilt and UCSF.

In this eye-opening session, Dr. Buchanan explored the powerful connection between adolescent mental health and substance use, and what families can actually do about it. Youth ambassadors also shared wisdom from the teen perspective. Watch the recording.

Help Shape San Rafael’s New Library & Community Center at Albert Park

San Rafael is planning a new Library & Community Center at Albert Park, and they want to hear from you!

Approved by voters in 2024, this exciting project will create a welcoming space for learning, recreation, creativity and community connection for generations to come. As planning gets underway, the City is asking community members to help shape the future of the facility. What programs, spaces and features are most important to you? What would make this a place you and your family would love to visit?

Take the 5–7-minute survey to share your ideas and priorities. Whether you live, work, learn or spend time in San Rafael, your feedback matters.
